Plants create energy to fuel their life and growth by transforming the sun’s energy into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis.
Humans create energy from the food we eat with the help of mitochondria; the energy-producing compartments in the cells of our body.
Let’s appreciate how magnificent this process is.
These incredible organelles of life vary in number from cell to cell based on the energy requirements of the particular cell type. Most cells have about 300 mitochondria, but cells that require a lot of energy, like the liver and heart, have 2,000 and 5,000 per cell respectively.
Some references claim that some brain cells have close to a million mitochondria per cell. All told, the typical adult human has over a quadrillion mitochondria, that is, 1,000 trillion. And since mitochondria have their own DNA, there are more molecules of mitochondrial DNA in the human body than the total in the nucleus of all the cells in our body. A growing amount of research shows that enhancing mitochondrial function can improve many health issues, as well as being a strategy to slow down the aging process, especially in the brain. Enhancing mitochondrial function requires three key goals: 🔹Provide all essential nutrients; eat healthy with lots of plant foods in your diet & take your multiple vitamin and mineral formula + omega-3 fatty acids. 🔹Use specific dietary supplements as mitochondrial enhancers to protect and enhance mitochondrial function (I’ll talk more about this soon!). 🔹Reduce exposure to damaging factors such as cigarettes, environmental toxins (pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.), and drugs (prescription, over-the-counter (OTC), and illicit).
